Block printing on fabric







BLOCK PRINTING
Traditionally, block printing was used to print fabrics. This process involves sketching and carving a design into a block of wood, applying ink or dye, and stamping it into a finished fabric.

Block printing is known to have been, used in India since at least the 12 century, although this method is thought to be 2,000 years old. Indian Artician borrowed a technique from other countries, one theory States and turned it into culturally distinct art form.

Wood block printing was used mostly to print religious books. The most famous book printed during the Tang Dynasty was the Diamond Sutra. This huge Book included pictures and text and helped to spread Buddhism throughout Asia.

Wood block printing on textiles is the process of printing patterns on textiles usually of linen, cotton or silk, by means of incised wooden blocks. It is the earliest, simplest and slowest of all methods of textile printing.
